Soda blasting is a process when the sodium bicarbonate is used to clean the surface. This procedure involves applying sodium bicarbonate towards a surface using compressed air. Soda blasting is a type of sandblasting process that does not damage the surface so it is very appropriate for sensitive materials that can be damaged easily. It contains a blast generator that provides a high pressured air. Another part of sandblasting machine is a blast hose that is designed to operate with wet and dry materials. The blast nozzle that has to be made of carbide is a part of equipment that is not a typical wear part in this procedure. Material that is used for soda blasting is sodium bicarbonate that is also known as baking soda.
This material is very friable and consists a lot of small fragments that with tiny explosions remove materials that are tied on surface. Soda blasting was first used about year 1990 for purpose of restoring the Statue of Liberty. This method is very useful because allows to clean thick layers without damaging the surface so it is very suitable for tasks involving restoration.
